7th Annual Regional Journalism Convention

Customs House, 1 Bond St, Newcastle
Saturday August 9, 2008

WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE CHRIS MASTERS AS OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER

+ DISCOUNTS FOR GROUPS & STUDENTS

After winning the Walkley Non-Fiction Book Award in 2007 for his biography of Alan Jones (Jonestown), Chris travelled to America for the Nieman Narrative Conference at Harvard University. He also managed to fit in some time on the US presidential nominations campaign trail, so we anticpate some juicy yarns to emerge in his keynote speech on narrative techniques and teh power of a good yarn.

The annual Regional Journalism Convention is the essential survival guide for anyone working in rural, suburban or regional media. It is hosted jointly by the Walkley Foundation for Journalism and the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance.

In 2008 the convention will return to Newcastle in conjuction with the Northern NSW Regional Journalism Awards. The program will revolve around the power of regional journalists to be a voice for their communities. We'll also be drawing on research and findings from the Future of Journalism Project to find new tools, techniques and ideas to help you work even more effectively.

DOWNLOAD THE FULL PROGRAM HERE. Sessions include:

  • practical workshops on photography, gadgets, tech tools, interviewing skills and narrative techniques
  • discussions about dealing with trauma on the job
  • a case study of the Walkley-winning ABC Newcastle team's emergency coverage
  • debates about what the future will hold for regional journalism
